Idiot is a word derived from the Greek ?δι?τη?, idi?t?s ("person lacking professional skill", "a private citizen", "individual"),
from ?διο?, idios ("private", "one's own").[1] In Latin the word idiota ("ordinary person, layman") preceded the Late Latin meanin
g "uneducated or ignorant person".[2] Its modern meaning and form dates back to Middle English around the year 1300, from the
Old French idiote ("uneducated or ignorant person"). The related word idiocy dates to 1487 and may have been analogously modeled
on the words prophet[3] and prophecy.[4][5] The word has cognates in many other languages. An idiot in Athenian democracy was
someone who was characterized by self-centerednessand concerned almost exclusively with private?as opposed to public?affairs
.[6] Idiocy was the natural state of ignorance into which all persons were born and its opposite, citizenship, was effected
through formalized education.[6] In Athenian democracy, idiots were born and citizens were made through education (although
citizenship was also largely hereditary). "Idiot" originally referred to "layman, person lacking professional skill", "person so
mentally deficient as to be incapable of ordinary reasoning". Declining to take part in public life, such as democratic government of the polis
(city state), was considered dishonorable. "Idiots" were seen as having bad judgment in public and political matters. Over time, the
term "idiot" shifted away from its original connotation of selfishness and came to refer to individuals with overall bad judgment
?individuals who are "stupid". According to the Bauer-Danker Lexicon, the noun ?διωτ?? in ancient Greek meant "civilian" (ref Josephus Bell
2 178), "private citizen" (ref sb 3924 9 25), "private soldier as opposed to officer," (Polybius 1.69), "relatively unskilled, not clever,"
(Herodotus 2,81 and 7 199).[7] The military connotation in Bauer's definition stems from the fact that ancient Greek armies in the time of total
war mobilized all male citizens (to the age of 50) to fight, and many of these citizens tended to fight poorly and ignorantly.
Disability and early classification and nomenclatureIn 19th- and early 20th-century medicine and psychology, an "idiot" was a person
with a very severe intellectual disability. In the early 1900s, Dr. Henry H. Goddard proposed a classificationsystem for intellectual disability
based on the Binet-Simon concept of mental age. Individuals with the lowest mental age level (less than three years) were identified as idiots;
imbeciles had a mental age of three to seven years, and morons had amental age of seven to ten years.[8] The term "idiot" was used to refer to people
aving an IQ below 30[citation needed][9][10] IQ, or intelligence quotient, was originally determined by dividin

actual age. The concept of mental age has fallen into disfavor, though, and IQ is now determined on the basis
of statistical distributions.[11]In current American medical classification, these people are now said to have "profound
intellectual disability" but this term is not in use in the United Kingdom.United States law Ambox current red.svg This section
needs to be updated. Please update this article to reflect recent events or newly available information. (December 2011) Until 2007, the
California Penal Code Section 26 stated that "Idiots" were one of six types of people who are not capable of committing crimes. In
2007 the code was amended to read "persons who are mentally incapacitated."[12] In 2008, Iowa voters passed a measure replacing "idiot,
or insane person" in the State's constitution with "person adjudged mentally incompetent."[13]In several U.S. states, "idiots" do
not have the right to vote:Kentucky Section 145[14] Mississippi Article 12, Section 241[15] New Mexico Article VII, section 1[16]
Ohio Article V, Section 6[17] The constitution of the state of Arkansas was amended in the general election of 2008 to, among other
things, repeal a provision (Article 3, Section 5) which had until its repeal prohibited "idiots or insane persons" from voting.[18]"Idiots"
are also barred from voting in British parliamentary elections.[19]In literature Wikiquote has quotations related to: Idiot A few authors
have used "idiot" characters in novels, plays and poetry. Often these characters are used to highlight or indicate something
else (allegory). Examples of such usage are William Faulkner's The Sound and the Fury, Daphne du Maurier's Rebecca and William
Wordsworth's The Idiot Boy. Idiot characters in literature are often confused with or subsumed within mad or lunatic characters. The most
common imbrication between these two categories of mental impai ment occurs in the polemic surrounding Edmund from William Shakespeare's
King Lear. In Fyodor Dostoevsky's novel The Idiot, the idiocy of the main character, Prince Lev Nikolaievich Myshkin, is attributed more to
his honesty, trustfulness, kindness, and humility, than to a lack of intellectual ability. Nietzsche claimed, in his The Antichrist, that
Jesus was an idiot. This resulted from his description of Jesus as having an aversion toward the material world.[20] ^ Liddell-Scott-Jones A Greek-

Nietzsche claimed, in his The Antichrist, that

mutagens, teratogens and harmful pollutants, and to exaggerate the dangers of chemicals. Paracelsus (1493?1541), the father
of toxicology, once wrote: "Everything is poison, there is poison in everything. Only the dose makes a thing not a poison"[7] (see
median lethal dose). The term "poison" is also used in a figurative sense: "His brother's presence poisoned the atmosphere at the
party". The law defines "poison" more strictly. Substances not legally required to carry the label "poison" can also cause a medical
condition of poisoning. Some poisons are also toxins, which is any poison produced by animals, vegetables or bacterium, such as
the bacterial proteins that cause tetanus and botulism. A distinction between the two terms is not always observed, even among scientists
. The derivative forms "toxic" and "poisonous" are synonymous. Animal poisons delivered subcutaneously (e.g., by sting or bite) are
also called venom. In normal usage, a poisonous organism is one that is harmful to consume, but a venomous organism uses venom to kill
its prey or defend itself while still alive. A single organism can be both poisonous and venomous, but that is rare.[8]
All living things produce substances to protect them from getting eaten, so the term "poison" is usually only used for substances which
are poisonous to humans, while substances that mainly are poisonous to a common pathogen to the organism and humans are considered antibi
otics. Bacteria are for example a common adversary for Penicillium chrysogenum mold and humans, and since the mold's poison only targets
bacteria humans may use it for getting rid of bacteria in their bodies. Human antimicrobial peptides which are toxic to viruses, fungi
, bacteria and cancerous cells are considered a part of the immune system.[9In nuclear physics, a poison is a substance that obstructs
or inhibits a nuclear reaction. For an example, see nuclear poison.Environmentally hazardous substances are not necessarily poisons, and
vice versa. For example, food-industry wastewater?which may contain potato juice or milk?can be hazardous to the ecosystems of streams and
rivers by consuming oxygen and causing eutrophication, but is nonhazardous to humans and not classified as a poison.Biologically speaking
, any substance, if given in large enough amounts, is poisonous and can cause death. For instance, several kilograms worth of water would
constitute a lethal dose. Many substances used as medications?such as fentanyl?have an LD50 only one order of magnitude greater than the

mutagens, teratogens and harmful pollutants, and to exaggerate the dangers of chemicals.
Many substances used as medications?such as fentanyl?have an LD50 only one order of magnitude greater than the
ED50. An alternative classification distinguishes between lethal substances that provide a therapeutic value and those that do not.

substances than those legally classified as a poison.Chronic poisoning is long-term repeated or continuous exposure to a poison where
symptoms do not occur immediately or after each exposure. The patient gradually becomes ill, or becomes ill after a long latent period.
Chronic poisoning most commonly occurs following exposure to poisons that bioaccumulate, or are biomagnified, such as mercury, gadolinium, and lead.
Contact or absorption of poisons can cause rapid death or impairment. Agents that act on the nervous system can paralyze in seconds or

Inhaled or ingested cyanide, used as a method of execution in gas chambers, almost instantly starves the body of energy by inhibiting
the enzymes in mitochondria that make ATP. Intravenous injection of an unnaturally high concentration of potassium chloride, such as

Witchcraft (also called witchery or spellcraft) broadly means the practice of, and belief in, magical skills and abilities that are able to be
exercised by individuals and certain social groups. Witchcraft is a complex concept that varies culturally and societally; therefore, it is
difficult to define with precision[1] and cross-cultural assumptions about the meaning or significance of the term should be applied with
caution. Witchcraft often occupies a religious, divinatory or medicinal role,[2] and is often present within societies and groups whose
cultural framework includes a magical world view.[1]The concept of witchcraft and the belief in its existence have existed throughout recorded
history. They have been present or central at various times, and in many diverse forms, among cultures and religions worldwide, including
both "primitive" and "highly advanced" cultures,[3] and continue to have an important role in many cultures today.[2] Scientifically, the
existence of magical powers and witchcraft are generally believed to lack credence and to be unsupported by high quality experimental testing,
although individual witchcraft practices and effects may be open to scientific explanation or explained via mentalism and psychology.
Historically, the predominant concept of witchcraft in the Western world derives from Old Testament laws against witchcraft, and entered the
mainstream when belief in witchcraft gained Church approval in the Early Modern Period. It posits a theosophical conflict between good and evil,
where witchcraft was generally evil and often associated with the Devil and Devil worship. This culminated in deaths, torture and scapegoating
(casting blame for human misfortune),[4][5] and many years of large scale witch-trials and witch hunts, especially in Protestant Europe, before
largely ceasing during the European Age of Enlightenment. Christian views in the modern day are diverse and cover the gamut of views from intense
belief and opposition (especially from Christian fundamentalists) to non-belief, and in some churches even approval. From the mid-20th century,
witchcraft ? sometimes called contemporary witchcraft to clearly distinguish it from older beliefs ? became the name of a branch of modern
paganism. It is most notably practiced in the Wiccan and modern witchcraft traditions, and no longer practices in secrecy.[6]
The Western mainstream Christian view is far from the only societal perspective about witchcraft. Many cultures worldwide continue to have
widespread practices and cultural beliefs that are loosely translated into English as "witchcraft", although the

in these cultures were at times influenced by the prevailing Western concepts. Witch hunts, scapegoating, and killing or shunning of suspected
witches still occurs in the modern era,[7] with killings both of victims for their supposedly magical body parts, and of suspected witchcraft
practitioners.Suspicion of modern medicine due to beliefs about illness being due to witchcraft also continues in many countries to this day,
with tragic healthcare consequences. HIV/AIDS[8] and Ebola virus disease[9] are two examples of often-lethal infectious disease epidemics whose medical
care and containment has been severely hampered by regional beliefs in witchcraft. Other severe medical conditions whose treatment is hampered in
this way include tuberculosis, leprosy, epilepsy and the common severe bacterial Buruli ulcer.[10][11] Public healthcare often requires considerable
education work related to epidemology and modern health knowledge in many parts of the world where belief in witchcraft prevails, to encourage
effective preventive health measures and treatments, to reduce victim blaming, shunning and stigmatization, and to prevent the killing of people
The word "witchcraft" derives from the Old English wiccecraft, a compound of "wicce" ("witch") and "craft" ("craft").[12]
In anthropological terminology, witches differ from sorcerers in that they don't use physical tools or actions to curse; their maleficium is perceived
as extending from some intangible inner quality, and one may be unaware of being a witch, or may have been convinced of his/her nature by the
suggestion of others.[13] This definition was pioneered in a study of central African magical beliefs by E. E. Evans-Pritchard, who cautioned that
it might not correspond with normal English usage.[14]Historians of European witchcraft have found the anthropological definition difficult to apply
to European and British witchcraft, where witches could equally use (or be accused of using) physical techniques, as well as some who really had
attempted to cause harm by thought alone.[15] European witchcraft is seen by historians and anthropologists as an ideology for explaining misfortune;
however, this ideology has manifested in diverse ways, as described below.[16] and endangering of animal species for body parts believed to convey

was clearly present in many cultures, as traditions in both folk magic and religious magic have the purpose of countering malicious magic or
identifying malicious magic users. Many examples appear in early texts, such as those from ancient and Babylonia. Malicious magic users can
become a credible cause for disease, sickness in animals, bad luck, sudden death, impotence and other such misfortunes. Witchcraft of a more benign
and socially acceptable sort may then be employed to turn the malevolence aside, or identify the supposed evil-doer so that punishment may be
carried out. The folk magic used to identify or protect against malicious magic users is often indistinguishable from that used by the witches
themselves. There has also existed in popular belief the concept of white witches and white witchcraft, which is strictly benevolent. Many neopagan
witches strongly identify with this concept, and profess ethical codes that prevent them from performing magic on a person without their request.
Where belief in malicious magic practices exists, such practitioners are typically forbidden by law as well as hated and feared by the general

signify the means employed to carry out a magical action. A spell could consist of a set of words, a formula or verse, or a ritual action, or any
combination of these.[17] Spells traditionally were cast by many methods, such as by the inscription of runes or sigils on an object to give it
agical powers; by the immolation or binding of a wax or clay image (poppet) of a person to affect him or her magically; by the recitation of
ncantations; by the performance of physical rituals; by the employment of magical herbs as amulets or potions; by gazing at mirrors, swords or other
specula (scrying) for purposes of divination; and by many other means.[18]Strictly speaking, "necromancy" is the practice of conjuring the spirits of
the dead for divination or prophecy ? although the term has also been applied to raising the dead for other purposes. The biblical Witch of Endor

In Christianity and Islam, sorcery came to be associated with heresy and apostasy and to be viewed as evil. Among the Catholics, Protestants, and secular
leadership of the European Late Medieval/Early Modern period, fears about witchcraft rose to fever pitch and sometimes led to large-scale witch-hunts. The
key century was the fifteenth, which saw a dramatic rise in awareness and terror of witchcraft, culminating in the publication of the Malleus Maleficarum
but prepared by such fanatical popular preachers as Bernardino of Siena.[23] Throughout this time, it was increasingly believed that Christianity was engag
ed in an apocalyptic battle against the Devil and his secret army of witches, who had entered into a diabolical pact. In total, tens or hundreds of thousand
s of people were executed, and others were imprisoned, tortured, banished, and had lands and possessions confiscated. The majority of those accused were wom
en, though in some regions the majority were men.[24][25] "Warlock" is sometimes mistakenly used for male witch.[26] Accusations of witchcraft were often co
mbined with other charges of heresy against such groups as the Cathars and Waldensians. The Malleus Maleficarum, (Latin for "Hammer of The Witches") was a wi
tch-hunting manual written in 1486 by two German monks, Heinrich Kramer and Jacob Sprenger. It was used by both Catholics and Protestants[27] for several hu
ndred years, outlining how to identify a witch, what makes a woman more likely than a man to be a witch, how to put a witch on trial, and how to punish a wi
tch. The book defines a witch as evil and typically female. The book became the handbook for secular courts throughout Renaissance Europe, but was not used
by the Inquisition, which even cautioned against relying on the work,[28] and was later officially condemned by the Catholic Church in 1490.
In the modern Western world, witchcraft accusations have often accompanied the satanic ritual abuse moral panic. Such accusations are a counterpart to blood
libel of various kinds, which may be found throughout history across the globe.White witchesThroughout the early modern period, the English term "witch

witches still occurs in the modern era,[7] with killings both of victims for their supposedly magical body parts, and of suspected witchcraft
practitioners.Suspicion of modern medicine due to beliefs about illness being due to witchcraft also continues in many countries to this day,
with tragic healthcare consequences.

An idiot in Athenian democracy was
someone who was characterized by self-centerednessand concerned almost exclusively with private?as opposed to public?affairs
.[6] Idiocy was the natural state of ignorance into which all persons were born and its opposite, citizenship, was effected
throucation.[6] In Athenian democracy, idiots were born and citizens were made through education (although
citizenship was also largely hereditary). "Idiot" originally referred to "layman, person lacking professional skill", "person so
mentally deficient as to be incapable of ordinary reasoning". Declining to take part in public life, such as democratic government of the polis
(city state), was considered dishonora "civilian" (ref Josephus Bell
2 178), "private citizen" (ref sb 3924 9 25), "private bius 1.69), "relatively unskilled, not clever,"
(Herodotus 2,81 and 7 199).[7] nomenclatureIn 19th- and early 20th-century medicine and psychology, an "idiot" was a person
with a very severe intellectual disability. In the early 1900s, Dr. Henry H. Goddard proposed a classificationsystem for intellectual disability
based on the Binet-Simon concept of mental age. Individuals with the lowest mental age level (less than three years) were identified as idiots;
imbeciles had a mental age of three to seven years, and morons had amental age of seven to ten years.[8] The term "idiot" was used to refer to people

The word "witchcraft" derives from the Old English wiccecraft, a compound of "wicce" ("witch") and "craft" ("craft").[12]
In anthropological terminology, witches differ from sorcerers in that they don't use physical tools or actions to curse; their maleficium is perceived

It posits a theosophical conflict between good and evil,
largely ceasing during the European Age of Enlightenment. Christian views in the modern day are diverse and cover the gamut of views from intense

Witchcraft (also called witchery or spellcraft) broadly means the practice of, and belief in, magical skills and abilities that are able to be
exercised by individuals and certain social groups. Witchcraft is a complex concept that varies culturally and societally; therefore, it is
difficult to define with precision[1] and cross-cultural assumptions about the meaning or significance of the term should be applied with
caution. Witchcraft often o have existed throughout recorded
history. They have been present or central at various times, and in many diverse forms, among cultures and religions worldwide, including
both "primitive" and "highly advanced" cultures,[3] and continue to have an important role in many cultures today.[2] Scientifically, the
existence of magical powers and witchcraft are generally believed to lack credence and to be unsupported by high quality experimental testing,
although individual witchcraft practices and effects may be open to scientific explanation or explaine against witchcraft, and entered the
mainstream when belief in witchcraft gained Church approval in the Early Modern Period. It posits a theosophical conflict between good and evil,
largely ceasing during the European Age of Enlightenment. Christian views in the modern day are diverse and cover the gamut of views from intense
belief and opposition (especially from Christian fundamentalists) to non-belief, and in some churches
